IX. Free-Standing Double-Cross Watermark. Regularly repeating upright and inverted double crosses, together with double crosses lying to the left and right.

Horizontally, upright crosses alternate with sideways crosses whose bases point to the right, while inverted crosses alternate with sideways crosses whose bases point to the left. These two types of horizontal rows alternate with one another.

The bases of the sideways crosses in successive horizontal rows, which point in alternating directions, lie on the same line. The watermark occurs in both upright and sideways orientations. Its orientation usually depends on the format of the stamp, although both orientations may occur on stamps of the same format. Two watermark positions can be distinguished: normal and mirrored. On small-format stamps, the orientation and position of the watermark can only rarely be determined.

Possible watermark orientations and positions

• A1: the bases of the left- and right-facing sideways crosses lie on one vertical line; the sideways crosses beside the upright crosses have their bases pointing to the right;
• A2: the bases of the left- and right-facing sideways crosses lie on one vertical line; the sideways crosses beside the upright crosses have their bases pointing to the left;
• B1: the bases of the upright and inverted crosses lie on one horizontal line; the sideways crosses beside the upright crosses have their bases pointing to the right;
• B2: the bases of the upright and inverted crosses lie on one horizontal line; the sideways crosses beside the upright crosses have their bases pointing to the left.
