Acorn Watermark (Oak Leaves and Acorns)

2023. 12. 19.

An upright oak twig with two leaves: a serrated leaf on the left and a smooth-edged leaf on the right. Two acorns appear on the left side of the stem and a gall on the right. It was the trademark watermark of the Diósgyőr paper mill and occurred on paper without a regular stamp watermark, repeating at intervals of approximately 190 mm horizontally and 280 mm vertically.

The large watermark motif measures approximately 47 × 50 mm and, in its entirety, extends across about four large-format or six small-format stamps. Depending on the format of the stamp, it occurs in an upright or sideways orientation, with four possible positions in each orientation. On small-format stamps the exact position usually cannot be determined, while on larger stamps it may be identified from the relative positions of the two different leaves and the two acorns in relation to the stem.
