IV. Small Crown Watermark

2023. 12. 30.

IV. Small Crown Watermark. An asymmetrical top-view representation of the crown.

The complete watermark design was small enough to fit within a Turul-design stamp and was repeated at intervals that could, in principle, have placed one complete crown on each stamp.

IV. Kiskorona-vízjel

In practice, a complete motif rarely appears on a single stamp; usually parts of two or more motifs are visible. Once on each printing sheet, a numeral watermark appeared between four crown motifs. On postage and newspaper stamps the watermark occurs upright, while on postage-due stamps it occurs sideways. All four watermark positions occur in both orientations. Both the orientation and the exact position can be determined on every stamp, because the asymmetrical details of the crown motif, as well as the cross on the crown, are sufficient for identification. For collecting watermark positions, the heraldically correct crown is regarded as the basic position.
