Many people think of stamps as boring little pieces of paper. Yet Hungary can be remarkably creative when producing special stamps, especially when presenting national traditions and cultural treasures.
The miniature works of art created for the 2012 Stamp Day use unusual techniques to present Hungary’s Christian traditions, the distinctive embroidery motifs of Kalocsa folk art and a special ingredient of Hungarian cuisine. One stamp in the Kalocsa collection was made with genuine Kalocsa embroidery, making it a genuine philatelic curiosity. Another stamp depicts Kalocsa paprika, without which the characteristic flavours and colours of Hungarian cuisine would be hard to imagine. This stamp was made using a special printing technology that contains the distinctive aroma of paprika enclosed in microcapsules.
The principal motif of the collection presents unique ecclesiastical art treasures from the Kalocsa Archiepiscopal Treasury; the souvenir sheet also contains a special layer of ink.
